A Silver Lake man was arrested Thursday for having a loaded gun at Silver Lake Elementary School.

Norman D. Henson, 34, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, being a habitual traffic offender, intimidation, battery, criminal mischief and public intoxication.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department responded to a call at the school Thursday morning. According to police reports, Henson was at the school to pick up his child when saw his ex-wife and apparently became angry.

The police said Henson's ex-wife went into the school, and Henson then went up to the car she had come from.

Reports say he assaulted the woman who was driving the car and threatened to go get his gun and kill her. Alcohol apparently played a role in the incident.

Henson was gone from school property when police arrived. However, he was due to appear at Kosciusko County Court for a hearing at 1 p.m. on an unrelated charge.

Henson was arrested when he showed up for his court appointment. The fully loaded gun was found in his mother's purse; she had apparently hidden it there to protect her son.

Henson was placed in Kosciusko County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
