Silver Lake Eyes Fireworks Regulations

Posted
SILVER LAKE - The use of fireworks will soon be regulated in Silver Lake.

At Tuesday's regular meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council approved an ordinance to limit the use of fireworks to the Fourth of July, New Year's Eve, Silver Lake Days and between June 29 and July 9.

The ordinance specifies that the use of sparklers, snakes, glow worms and other small, non-aerial fireworks are not limited to the dates specified. Also, in times of drought, the council may stop the use of all fireworks for the town's safety.

Those who disobey the ordinance, once it takes effect, will face fines of $100.

In other business, the council:

n Made a motion to deny remote computer access to Clerk-Treasurer Angie Glass. The access was granted when Glass had an emergency at home, and the board had to decide whether to keep the access or not. After a short discussion, council members Ron Jones and Linda Baker voted to deny the access and Council president voted against the motion.

n Received a letter from Town Receptionist Tonya Conley requesting compensation for her trips to pick up mail and do banking while she was the deputy clerk. Conley presented a list dating back to 2007 and requested the council pay her $1,390 for the trips. Since the current board is not the same board that served in 2007, they did not feel comfortable going back that far. After a discussion, the council decided to pay $2.50 each for the trips from Jan. 1, 2009, to July 9, 2009, when Conley was hired as the town receptionist. Trips to get the mail are included in that job description.

n Heard that the roof repair for the highway garage will cost less than $5,000. The council gave permission for Town Superintendent Jasun Blocher to go ahead with the project once all the quotes are in. Since equipment for the sewer is stored in the building, the roof will be paid for with money from the sewer fund.

n Heard that town employees are picking up leaves as they have time. Leaves will be picked up until the first snowfall. Also, residents are reminded that any leaves piled more than 6 feet from the curb cannot be reached by the truck's vacuum hose, and the trucks will not be driven into yards to get leaves.

n Gave permission for the Silver Lake Alumni Banquet to be held in the Silver Lake Fire Station next summer.

Silver Lake Town Council members are Ronald Jones, Linda Baker, and Gale Owens, president. Clerk-treasurer is Angie Glass.
