Silver Lake Days Debuts Bed Race

Posted
This year Silver Lake Days will add a new activity for festival goers.

Town Clerk-treasurer Tonya Conley and Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter worked together to organize a bed race for Silver Lake Days.

Silver Lake Days Committee member Gene Weller said that they would have had the bed race last year but Conley and Hollopeter did not have enough time to get it ready for the festival.

“I think it’s cool,” Weller said. “I want to watch it, not ride in it.”

The bed race will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, on Sycamore Street. The entry fee is $10 and the winner of the race will receive a bedpan trophy.

Both Conley and Hollopeter have worked organizing the event since last year’s Silver Lake Days.

“We really wanted to do something different,” Conley said. “We wanted something new that would be fun and allow everyone to have fun.”

So far the town has three teams, but are looking for six teams or more to have the race.  Information can be found at the Silver Lake Town Hall, or call Tonya Conley at 260-352-2120.

The town has even entered their police department as one of the teams racing.

“We wanted to perk (the festival) up,” Conley said. “This year may not be grand, but it will hopefully grow and become something people can look forward to.”

There are a few rules for the race. Beds cannot have any pedals, motors, or chains. There is a minimum of four wheels. Water guns are permissible, and broken beds will be disqualified.

Any team that would like to enter the bed race can find and turn in their registration packet and waiver at the Silver Lake Town Hall.
