Silver Lake Chooses Name For New Park

Posted

SILVER LAKE - Silver Lake's new sitting park will be called "Silver Lake Memory Park," Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter announced Tuesday at a town council meeting.

The name came from Andy O'Hara, Silver Lake Middle School. Hollopeter said a contest was held at the school to name the park, and O'Hara's name won.

In other business, council members:

• Discussed sidewalk replacements in the town.

"We're trying to budget it out," councilman Gail Owens said.

Brenda Wadkins, council president, explained that the town will not be able to replace all the sidewalks that need replaced because the town does not have enough money.

"We're starting in town first," she said. "At this point, the town's trying to pay for it on their own."

"We just want to fix the town up," Owens said.

Wadkins said this is the first year there was money in the budget for sidewalk replacement.

Three areas were approved for replacement Tuesday totaling $12,135. Wadkins said the town has $15,000 in the budget for replacements, and "we already used $1,200 of it for the bank."

• Approved colors for the water tower. It will be blue with red lettering. Painting will tentatively begin the first of August.

• Heard a report from town superintendent Phil Shalley. Two trees will be replaced by Creative Gardeners for a total of $200, "which is pretty reasonable," Shalley said.

• Approved the following: Graphics on Wheels to design new street signs for the town for approximately $2,496; a building permit for Adrian Bradley, Sycamore Street, to put in a new modular home; park donations; the 2001 EMS agreement; a touch-up paint job for the town dump truck for $460; and keeping the old police car for the reserve officers.

• Heard from Hollopeter on fund-raisers for the sitting park. He said two fund-raisers will be held to help pay for the town's new sitting park: selling 4-inch by 8-inch and 8-inch by 8-inch bricks to the public. The bricks would be engraved with whatever the buyer chooses and placed in the park; and raffling off a small police pedal car, "Lil' Chief 1," during Silver Lake Days this weekend. Tickets are $1 or six tickets for $5. Ticket sales begin Friday.

The Silver Lake Town Council members are: president Brenda Wadkins, Gail Owens and Donna McCune.
