SILVER LAKE - For $1,000 per year, the town of Silver Lake will add $2 million of umbrella insurance coverage to its policy.
Previously, the town held an insurance policy that totaled $3 million to cover possible lawsuits against the town.
In Indiana, $5 million is the highest judgment allowed against a town. That meant Silver Lake had the possibility of a $2 million gap in its coverage. The additional coverage the town approved covers judgments up to $5 million and costs $1,000 per year.
The town also read bids for the town's trash pickup and chose Stafford Solid Waste for its trash service. Trash pickup from Stafford will cost the town $31,800 per year.
During the meeting, Town Superintendent Jasun Blocher explained the recent boil advisories in the town. He said that two recent boil advisories were more of a precaution than a requirement.
According to state regulations, when the pressure in the system gets below 20 pounds per square inch, a boil advisory must be issued. In the two recent incidents, the pressure never fell below that level, but the boil advisory was issued just to be safe.
The advisories were cause by a frozen well and by a rupture of a pipe at the old schoolhouse.
