Two different summer school sessions and three weeks of enrichment camps will be offered this year at Warsaw Community Schools, according to Summer School Coordinator and Edgewood Middle School Principal JoElla Smyth.
Sign-up begins today.
The school board Monday night approved the summer school program.
“We feel 2,071 participants in 2011 speaks for itself,” Smyth said.
Summer Session I is June 6-28, and Session II is July 9-31. The enrichment camps will be July 9-13, July 16-20 and July 23-27.
The focus this summer will be making sure students in first through third grade are reading at grade level, and to provide a summer opportunity for students to retake the IREAD test after participating in a reading intervention program.
If a third-grader does not pass IREAD this spring, they can retake IREAD in the summer. If they do not pass IREAD then, the third-grader will not be allowed to move on to fourth grade, according to Indiana Department of Education rules.
Reading, writing and math literacy will be offered to students in first through seventh grade.
High school students can take summer courses for credit or credit recovery, or to open up space on their senior year schedule, Smyth said.
Drivers training, summer band, elective and required courses for graduation will be offered.
Each summer enrichment camp costs $100 per participant, and qualifying families may apply for scholarships, Smyth said. The Warsaw Education Foundation is sponsoring 15 scholarships. Additional funding sources are being sought to make it possible for all interested students to take part in the enrichment camps.
The enrichment camps are offered to students in kindergarten to 12th grade. A complete list of summer camps is on the corporation website.
Applications for the enrichment camps should be turned in to Smyth at Edgewood, 900 S. Union St., Warsaw.
Applications for summer school are available online at www.warsaw.k12.in.us beginning today. Courses fill up quickly, so they are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

School Board Secretary Dan Metzger said his son participated last year. He told Smyth that she and her staff run a phenomenal program and he would recommend it to anyone.
