Sidney, Jackson Volunteer Fire Department Marks 100 Years

SIDNEY – The Sidney/Jackson Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate 100 years as a department this month.
According to the organization’s press release, an open house and ice cream social will be June 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station, 103 E. Center St.
The department was formed in 1915 with the purchase of a hand-drawn two-wheel cart consisting of two soda acid chemical tanks with approximate capacity of 300 gallons, a cost of $600.
The first fire chief was Charles Stoneburner, who oversaw five to six volunteers.
In 1926, volunteer medical first responders were added to the department, serving the community by responding and assisting the ambulance crews.
There will be a meal provided by Big Boss Barbecue June 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire department in conjuction with the open house and ice cream social. Donations will be accepted for the meal and carry-out will be available.
The fire department will host a show with cars, trucks and motorcycles following the open house with registration at 3 p.m. and awards at 6 p.m. Proceeds will go toward the Hoosier Burn Camp, a camp for children who are victims of fires in Indiana.
