Shoppers Flock To Local Retail Outlets

Posted

This year's door-buster hour was set at 5 a.m. - the time shoppers flock to retail stores where prices have been set very low for a few hours.

Special sales continue through the weekend.

The Wal-Mart Superstore, 2501 Walton Blvd., Warsaw, was open Thanksgiving Day. Special pricing was effective at 5 a.m. today.

Manager Gary Elder said crowds of people were in the store when he arrived at 4 a.m., looking at their wristwatches.

"It's going very well. In the first hour, sales were up about 10 percent over last year," Elder said. "Things have kind of settled down and are running normally now."

JCPenny manager Ken Ashpole said the Warsaw store had a very good turnout.

He said the early hour to open is just a tradition, and many people were waiting when the key was turned at the Market Place Shopping Center location.

"We had hundreds of them," Ashpole said. "We don't have that many now.

"We're pleased with turnout and the (warm) weather is helping us. Everyone seems to be in a really good mood."

A few doors to the west, at Elder-Beerman, an employee there said shoppers were waiting outside for the 5 a.m. hour, too.

"We're very, very busy," she said.

Kmart employee Tracy Brown said, "We're packed."
