Posted

WINONA LAKE - A local woman is in stable condition today after she was accidentally shot in the side Wednesday afternoon.

Judy Childers, 45, no address available, was at the Nathan May residence at 900-D W. Canal St., Winona Lake, when the incident occurred.

According to Winona Lake Town Marshal Malcolm Gilbert, Childers, May and Robert Weaver were all at May's residence when the shooting took place and all were intoxicated. He said it was difficult to determine exactly what happened due to the level of intoxication of the three.

Apparently, May was handling a .22-caliber handgun when the weapon discharged. Childers was shot in the side, with the bullet lodging in her body. She was admitted to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where officials said this morning that she is in stable condition.

The matter remains under investigation.
