She was born Jan. 26, 1928, in Syracuse, to Merwood and Ola Garrison Ketring. On Sept. 7, 1946, she married Chester "Bud" Carpenter, who preceded her in 1981.
She was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker as well as a receptionist for RTI Transport.
She was active in Boy Scouts as a den mother, Girl Scouts and PTA.
She is survived by her son, Gregg (Sally) Carpenter, North Webster; grandchildren: Dorian (Anita) Carpenter, Cromwell; Travis Carpenter, Goshen; Rachell Carpenter, North Webster; Keith (Melinda) Galloway, Georgetown; and Mathew, Jonathan and Adam Norris, all of South Bend; and great-grandchildren, Paizlee Carpenter and Kaleb Galloway.
She was also preceded by her daughter, Debora, in 1990.
A memorial service for Shirley will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Syracuse Eagles.
Private family interment will be at Violett Cemetery at a later date.
