Shirley A. Boyer Smith, 63, of Winona Lake, died at 5:20 a.m. May 1, 2008, in Mason Health & Rehab, Warsaw.
She was born July 6, 1944, in Marion, to Samuel G. and Ruth Spencer Boyer.
She was a resident of Kosciusko County for many years and formerly was of Barbee Lake. She attended Warsaw Community Church. She graduated from high school in Worthington, Ohio; earned a bachelor's degree in business from Patricia Stevens College, Indianapolis; and attended Butler and Indiana universities. In the 1960s, she became a charter member of a newly formed chapter of PEO Sisterhood, Indianapolis. She was a certified ACE teacher and taught school for many years. She was a published author and specialized in poetry and children's literature.
Surviving are a daughter, Jaimee (and spouse Eric) Recker, Oakland, Md.; a granddaughter, Vava S. Recker, Oakland; a sister, Mary Lee (and spouse Thomas A.) Willman, Leesburg; a nephew, Sam Willman, Leesburg; and a niece, M.E. "Peg" Willman, Winona Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, with Pastor Dennis L. Bollenbacher officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
