Sherry A. Martin, a beloved friend, mother, grandmother and community member, passed away peacefully on Oct. 10, 2025, at her residence in Fort Wayne.
She was born on Dec. 2, 1944, in Goshen, to Rolland L. and Fern B. Metzler Johnson. She married Gerald Martin and they shared many moments together until his passing in 2018.
Sherry dedicated many years of her professional life to the banking industry. She graduated from high school in 1962, embarking on a journey that would lead to a rich tapestry of experiences and connections woven throughout her lifetime. Her greatest pride, however, lay not just in her career, but in her loving family. Sherry was a devoted mother and grandmother whose heart overflowed with affection for her children.
In addition to her personal accomplishments, Sherry was involved in her community as a past member of the Wawasee Community Bible Church, and most recently attended the Crossbridge Community Church of Fort Wayne. Her faith and service were reflections of her commitment to enriching the lives of others. Sherry found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. Throughout her years, she shared her musical talents, playing the piano, organ, and clarinet with a passion that touched the hearts of those around her. She delighted in solving crossword puzzles and painting, activities that brought her joy and could often be found bringing family together in laughter and fun.
She is survived by sons, Glen (Tammy) Root, Ryan (Ann) Root; and daughter, Kellye (Eric) Hoerr. She also cherished her role as a grandmother to seven grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren, providing them with an unwavering source of encouragement and love. As a sister, Sherry was a guiding light to Barb (Jack) Hart, Teresa Wells and her brother, Sam (Jill) Johnson. Even her stepchildren, Brenda (Tom) Bulger and David (Vickie) Martin, felt the embrace of her nurturing spirit. With five nieces and nephews added to her circle of love, and her beloved dog, Midget "Midgie," her family was abounded in love and togetherness.
Sherry was preceded in death by her beloved husband, who passed in 2018; her parents; and a cherished daughter.
Sherry's legacy of love, faith and family will continue to shine, shaping the lives of all who were lucky enough to call her mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
Visitation for Sherry will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mishler’s Funeral Home and Cremation center. Services will follow with Pastor Kim Chitwood officiating. Burial will be at the Milford Cemetery, 13029 N. CR 60W, Milford.
