Sheriff's Dept. Seeks $15,000 Grant For New Shotguns

Kosciusko County Commissioners gave approval Tuesday for the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department to pursue a $15,000 grant to upgrade the department's shotguns.

Sheriff Rocky Goshert told the commissioners the grant is part of the federal stimulus bill money dedicated to law enforcement. He said his department will not be responsible for any match for the grant. He said the main requirement is that the grant money be used for equipment his department will use for five or more years. Goshert said not all of his department's shotguns need to be replaced, but some are beginning to need major repairs. He said the grant money will be used to buy 23 Remington Model 870 shotguns. In other news, the commissioners approved the placement of a "No Semi-Trucks" sign at CR 150N. County Highway Superintendent Dennis Pletcher said the road is an off-shoot of CR 525. Pletcher said area residents have reported problems when large trucks try to use CR 150N. He said the road is narrow and makes a turn which semi-trucks aren't able to make without driving on residents' property.

The commissioners also approved a revision to the town of Syracuse's comprehensive plan. Since Syracuse participates in the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission, the town's comprehensive plan for development is included as an addendum in the county's comprehensive plan.

Syracuse is currently working on developing an industrial park on land the town bought in Elkhart County. Assistant County Planner Matt Sandy told the commissioners that Elkhart County's plan commission asked the town to make revisions to their comprehensive plan, and the revisions require the approval of both Syracuse and Kosciusko County. The Area Plan Commission sent a recommendation for the commissioners to approve the revisions.
