Sgt. Jeff Shaw was honored during a memorial detail Friday.
One year ago, Shaw was killed in an accident while answering a call on Ind. 14, 10 miles south of Warsaw near Silver Lake.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department unveiled a monument to Shaw at the front of the department building, next to the monument for KCSD Detective Sgt. Phillip Hochstetler, who died in 1994.
Shaw was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. He grew up in Atwood, and graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 1988. He started as a reserve officer with KCSD from 1992-1994. In July that year, he took a position as jailer in the work release program.
In July 1998, he was hired as a merit deputy, and in 2009 became a sergeant of the patrol division of KCSD. He was also a member of the Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.
Shaw and his wife, Angie, were married October 14, 2000. They had two children, Nikolas, 10, and Isabella, 8.
"We had so many agencies contact us about this memorial detail, that we sent out a press release as an official invitation," said Sgt. Chad Hill, public information officer for the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. "Jeff worked with most of the agencies in the area, everyone knew him."
At the start of the memorial service, Shaw's family was escorted to their seats by Lt. Chris McKeand.
Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert opened the service with a few remarks regarding Shaw.
"This is something we'll never forget," Goshert said. "It was an honor to know Jeff and to work with Jess. He was giving his all for the county, on this day, one year ago today."
Goshert was followed by Captain Aaron Rovenstine, who expressed admiration for Shaw's work ethic, and then by McKeand, who remembered Shaw as a good friend. Hill talked about last year's Jeff Shaw Memorial Ride, a county-wide motorcycle ride that was used in part to raise money for the memorial stone. Other contributions came from the sale of t-shirts, and friends and family.
Hill emphasized that no taxpayer dollars were used for the memorial. After the benediction presented by Chaplain Jim Beeler, "Taps" was played by Bruce Knouff, member of Warsaw American Legion Post 49.
Officers and other law enforcement personnel, representing every agency in Kosciusko County, were on hand for the memorial service.
