Like most on the right, Gary Gerard views sex as the root of all evil. In News Views he discusses the disturbing story of fifth-graders having sex in class and draws a parallel between the demise of the country and underage sex.
Mr. Gerard mentions that the incident took place in New Orleans, but doesn't explore the possibility that the horrors of Katrina may have played a part in this story.
These children witnessed the devastation Katrina brought to their city. They remember the people stranded on rooftops, on the overpass, in the Superdome. They remember the bloated corpses floating in the streets. They remember not having the basic necessities for survival. They remember the government looking the other way. These children were dehumanized by governmental incompetence and indifference. If they behave like animals, one need look no further than the White House for the cause.
Mr. Gerard goes on to quote alarming numbers of unwed births from 2004, then a bit later calls for a spiritual renewal. I thought we had a spiritual renewal in 2000 when the Boyking was anointed by the Supreme Court.
No, Gary, our problems are not caused by sex. You finally got it right in the last paragraph. Our destruction will be caused by greed, perversion, (Abu Graib, Guantanamo) and immorality (poverty, homelessness, lack of health care, warmongering).
I might add two more to the list, ignorance and apathy.
