The recent comments by Dr. Remington regarding the proposed annexation of the Tippecanoe and Chapman lakes area into the LRSD were very disappointing.
His less than resounding support for this annexation is quite confusing to me. As the Chief Health Officer of the County, he should, of all people, be extremely concerned about the failing septic systems around the lake area.
The facts are clear that the soils and lot sizes in the proposed area are inadequate to support the proper functioning of septic systems. Thirteen years ago the need was demonstrated for a sewer system in this area but the project failed due to misinformation and politics.
How long do we continue to wait? Do we wait until the ground water becomes toxic and the state mandates the remediation as they are doing in Leesburg? It will not get any cheaper to deal with this issue in the future.
The County Health Department needs to be on the forefront advocating for this project, not raising bogus concerns about it possibly interfering with the Barbee project. The same facts that led to the Barbee chain getting a sewer district are present for the proposed annexation area. Now is the time to proceed with this project and further delay cannot be justified on an economic or environmental basis.
