Seven Warsaw Teachers Get Red Apple GrantsThe Warsaw Education Foundation recently awarded more than $8,000 in Red Apple Grants to seven teachers from four Warsaw Community Schools.

Red Apple Grants are awarded to teachers for classroom projects as well as schoolwide projects that advance enrichment opportunities, support innovative and inventive teaching and promote academic exploration.

Red Apple Grants awarded for the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year are:

- Megan Davis, Leesburg Elementary School, "I Do and I Understand".

Materials purchased for this program will provide fourth-grade students with a variety of math activity kits, games, puzzles, geometric shapes and more to help teach students mathematical concepts required by Indiana State Standards for Math.

- Jodi Rhoades, Leesburg Elementary School, "Literacy by Design".

The purchase of second-grade reading books for the schoolwide leveled reading library will fill a gap at this level for materials used by students in grades kindergarten to sixth grade who are reading at the second-grade level.

- Steve Savage, Warsaw Community High School, "Who Dun It?".

Biomedical science students will work with forensic science tools to investigate a simulated crime scene while they attempt to prove a hypothesis of what actually happened to the "crime victim".

- Marcie Cooper, Madison Elementary School, "Phonics is Fun".

Literacy kits for kindergarten students will build a foundation for reading by providing enrichment activities in the areas of phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, written composition, high frequency words and letter formation.

- Scott Carmichael, Lakeview Middle School, "Technology Education for the Future".

Work stations to support computers, learning modules and hands-on learning strategies will provide students with the ability to understand how technology is essential in areas such as science, engineering, math, communications, construction, transportation and manufacturing.

- Deb Stahly and Janet Kiser, Leesburg Elementary School, "Math Manipulatives".

Materials purchased for this program will provide first-grade students with a variety of math activity kits, games, puzzles, geometric shapes and more to help teach students mathematical concepts required by Indiana State Standards for Math.
