INDIANAPOLIS - State Sen. Tom Weatherwax (R-Logansport) has announced he will seek the Republican nomination for re-election from Senate District 18 to the Indiana Senate. District 18 encompasses Cass, Fulton, Kosciusko, Miami, Pulaski and Wabash counties.
Weatherwax currently serves as chairman of the Senate Natural Resources Committee. He also is a member of the Senate committees on Finance, Agriculture and Small Business and Commerce and Consumer Affairs.
"There are many issues, such as economic development and property tax restructuring, that are unfinished," Weatherwax said. "My challenges are providing our children with a quality education, holding our schools to standards of accountability and we must work to bring Indiana's budget into balance without raising taxes."
Weatherwax has written and worked on many significant bills during this tenure in the legislature. As chairman of the Senate Education Committee, he helped write the Governor's Education Roundtable legislation as well as the education standards and accountability legislation. As chairman of the Energy and Economic Development Committee, Weatherwax wrote clean coal technology legislation that promoted a cleaner environment and energy independence for the state.
He has played and continues to play a vital role in improving our state's economy. He was the author of the legislation that eliminated the inventory tax included in the major 2002 property tax and economic development restructuring passed by the General Assembly.
"It is vitally important for Indiana and especially our area of the state to further economic development," said Weatherwax. "We must create good paying jobs while maintaining the jobs we have now."
Weatherwax is the author of Senate Bill 272, which passed out of the Senate this week. It provides extra incentives for business to build or expand on military bases like Grissom. The bill gives tax incentives for locating new operations in enterprise areas. Citizens who invest in these companies also will receive significant cost credits.
"I want to thank everyone in my district for everything they have done for me in the past and look forward to working with them in the future," he said.
Weatherwax and his wife, Kay, have six children and 14 grandchildren. His past political experience includes serving in the Indiana House of Representatives for four years. He was elected to the Senate in 1988.
He is corporate secretary and sales manager of The Andersons Inc.
