Seed Event for Uganda Saturday

Posted
ROCHESTER – The Northern Indiana Seed Event, a Global Aid Network event to benefit the needy in Uganda, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rochester Middle School.
Volunteers can choose from either of two shifts, from 9 a.m. to noon or from 1  to 4 p.m. The goal is to assemble 10,000 packets of seeds and 300 volunteers are needed, according to event organizer and Allstate Insurance Agent Tim Doud.
He called thes event “a local one day mission trip for people between the ages of seven and 97. Many people may not feel called to go on an overseas mission trip due to money, time off from work or health reasons, but can give three hours of their Saturday to help make a difference in people’s lives in the country of Uganda.”
Begun in 2010, the Seed Harvest Program was developed as a tool to help address the problem of world hunger by giving families hope through seeds. By sending a variety pack of seeds to people in agricultural countries, Global Aid Network enables individuals to plant small plots that will grow food to feed their families for four to six months.
Seeds are packaged into HarvesterPacks which are distributed to partners around the world. These seeds can provide an opportunity for a family to have an income through the sale of the surplus fruits and vegetables, the release states.
The cost of the seeds and shipping to Uganda is $10,000, of which $3,400 is still needed, according to Doud.
