The hills of Warsaw will be alive this weekend with “The Sound of Music” as the high school drama department will present the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II musical.
Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors.
Based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, it is set in Austria on the eve of the invasion and forced incorporation of Austria to Nazi Germany in March 1938.
The production tells Maria’s story, who takes a job as governess to the von Trapp family while she contemplates whether to be a nun or not. Her relationship with the children becomes one of love, and then she falls for their widowed father, Captain von Trapp.
When the Captain is ordered to the German navy, he and Maria decide to flee Austria with the children because he opposes the Nazis.
The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical features such memorable numbers as “Maria,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “So Long, Farewell,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Edelweiss.”
The 1965 film version starred Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the Captain. It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Wise, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing and Best Music.
