WHITLEY COUNTY -ÊA second person has died from injuries suffered in a car-buggy accident Sunday in Whitley County.

The driver of the buggy, Emmanuel Schwartz, 17, of South Whitley, died late Sunday night at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Stephen E. Jannings, 42, of North Manchester, was pronounced dead at 4:08 a.m. Sunday, shortly after the accident when the horse went through the windshield of the car.

Jannings was driving eastbound on Ind. 205, south of CR 350S in Whitley County around 4 a.m. Sunday when his vehicle hit a westbound horse-drawn buggy that crossed the center line.

Emmanuel Schwartz and a passenger in the buggy, Steven Schwartz, 24, of South Whitley, were transported to Parkview Hospital after being thrown from the buggy onto the road in the accident.

Steven Schwartz later was released from the hospital after being treated for his injuries.

Police suspect alcohol use by Emmanuel Schwartz was a factor in the crash, but toxicology tests are pending.

The accident remains under investigation by the Whitley County Sheriff's Department.
