Trinity UMC Celebrates Scout Sunday Trinity United Methodist Church hosts two Scout groups. Cub Scout Pack 3736 meets Thursdays and Boy Scout Troop 715 meets Mondays at 7 p.m. A Scout Sunday Celebration was organized Feb. 12. The Scouts served as ushers, started the opening part of the morning service with the presentation of the flags, and assisted with the offering.
Boy Scouts Hold Chess Tournament For Badge One of the requirements for the Chess Merit Badge is to participate in a chess tournament.
Jay Bolduc, Scoutmaster of Troop 776, met with the Scouts of Troop 715 at two of their weekly meetings to teach them about chess. After about three hours of instruction, all that was left was to be in a chess tournament.
Troop 715 adult leaders Joe Hawn, Julie and Mike Canada, Dave King, Kathy and Kevin Smith and Lynn DesJardins organized an overnighter at the Nye Youth Cabin.
The evening started with a walk up to the county jail and a tour of the facilities. Then back to the cabin where Hawn, who is also a DARE officer with the Warsaw Police Dept., worked with the Scouts to finish the Fingerprinting Merit Badge.
After that, five chess sets were laid out by Dick McCleary on the tables and the Scouts spent about three hours competing in the chess tournament. Pizza was served earlier and hot dogs were consumed later. Peggy Timbers brought a homemade cake so Jordan Timbers could celebrate his birthday. Julie Canada had some fun games for everyone to play later in the evening.
Saturday morning, after a pancake and sausage breakfast, the Scouts and leaders went out to the fairgrounds to assist in the unloading from a semi-trailer and the distribution of potatoes into trucks, vans and cars that took the potatoes to the area food pantries. This was two hours of community service.
After the work was done, those Scouts who needed it went over to Jefferson School and Scott McClintock worked with those scouts on the “Citizenship in the Nation” Merit Badge. The Winona Lake Post Office, which is a government facility, was visited as part of the requirements.
