Liesl Schroedl was announced as winner of the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Contest.
The announcement took place at the Indiana DAR Awards Luncheon in Indianapolis May 20. She received a framed certificate, an Indiana DAR Good Citizen pin and a monetary scholarship.
Only one student, a senior, may be honored as a school’s DAR Good Citizen.
Students selected by administrative faculty to represent their schools were: Bryce Glock, Lakeland Christian Academy; Taylor Eaton, Tippecanoe Valley High School; Liesl Schroedl, Warsaw Community High School; and Kaitlyn Arford, Wawasee High School.
It was announced at the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of DAR Patriotic Tea that Schroedl was chosen to represent the chapter in the Indiana DAR Good Citizen Contest. The tea was held March 25 in Warsaw.
Pat VanDeWater, chapter chairman of the DAR Good Citizen Contest, presented a pin, certificate and monetary award at each of their recently held school’s awards night.
Schroedl’s biographical sketch and essay were forwarded to the Indiana DAR Good Citizen Committee chairman to be judged with 61other Indiana chapter winners. The title of the essay was “Our American Heritage and Responsibility for Preserving It” with the emphasis question being “Describe Freedoms and Responsibilities of a Good Citizen.”
Judging was based on qualities set by the National Society of DAR which are dependability, service, leadership and patriotism to an outstanding degree.
Thirteen finalists attended the State DAR Awards Luncheon where each received a handcrafted limestone clock. The focus question for the finalists to answer at the luncheon was “Who do you feel has had the biggest impact on your life?”
Besides her parents, Schroedl spoke about Jeff Grose, government teacher at the high school. Attending the luncheon with Schroedl were her parents, Steve and Yvette Schroedl, and brother, Sam. Representing Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter DAR were Pat VanDeWater and Kathy Gawthrop.
Some of Schroedl’s numerous activities, special projects and awards include Kosciusko Endowment Youth Services; Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy; Warsaw Community High School Council Class Representative, choir and National Honor Society; Tiger Student Athletic Board; Sacred Heart Catholic Church Youth Group, alter server, and musician; volunteer at Baker Youth Club with Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy; worked with WCHS Clothing Closet; valedictorian; Richard Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders, Trine University Math Competition; State Chorale awards; and National Merit Commendation.
