Warsaw senior adds more local flavor to Cardinals

They were quite the tandem for the Warsaw Tigers, and starting next year Jon Schram and Tyler Ostrom will team up for the Ball State Cardinals.
Schram, a senior at Warsaw, committed Thursday evening to play golf for coach Mike Fleck and Ball State, where Ostrom is currently a freshman.
The dynamic duo helped the Tigers to a seventh-place finish at state in 2011 and a sixth-place finish in June.
“It did come into play,” Schram said this morning when asked if reuniting with Ostrom was a factor in his decision. “It wasn’t the deciding factor, but it did come into play, so did the fact (Triton senior) Quentyn Carpenter is going to play there.”
Schram, 18, finished eighth as an individual in this year’s IHSAA state tournament.
He fired a 36-hole score of 147, shooting a 73 and 74 on the par-72 Legends of Indiana course in Franklin.
“He’s the epitome of a high school professional golfer,” Warsaw coach Ben Barkey said of Schram. “He takes it very seriously. He’s a great model for the younger players to look at. It’s one thing to tell the younger players how to do it, but when you can show them a player like Jon Schram and they can see it right in front of them, that’s a special thing.”
Barkey has coached the Tigers for 10 years. Schram, the son of Jeff and Jackie Schram, is the third Warsaw player in that time to choose Ball State, joining Ostrom and 2005 state championship team member Chris Hanson.
“Coach Fleck is a great coach, and they have a great program,” said Schram. “They played some outstanding golf this fall, and they’re ranked nationally.”
Before he heads to Muncie, however, Schram has one more season with Barkey and the Tigers.
Ostrom won the individual state championship in 2011. Barkey believes Schram could do so in the upcoming season.
“He definitely has the ability to win the whole tournament,” Barkey said of Schram, who is left-handed but golfs as a right-hander. “I expect him to have a great senior year.”
