Schoops Opens Monday With Classic Taste, Feel

One may have that deja vu feeling when passing through the intersection of old and new U.S. 30 east of Warsaw.

Certainly that was the case last Sunday, when the Cruisin' Hoosiers Auto Club helped Art and Debbie Mascharello set the stage for the May 10 opening of Schoops Classic Handmade Hamburgers, where kitchen renovations for the new restaurant, at the former location of the Boston Grill, are nearly complete.

"We specialize in fresh, hand-made burgers, fries and home-made onion rings," Art said. "Our chili is also fresh and made daily."

The new restaurant will be the 21st for the 15-year-old restaurant chain, and will be the fourth franchise for the Mascharellos.

"We were one of the original franchises, opening our Merrillville store in 1984," Art said. "We opened our second in Hobart in 1991, the third in Crown Point in 1993.

"Debbie actually started and ran the business while I ran my construction company - Midwest Building and Development," he added.

The restaurant chain is based in Munster, Ind., and has stores in Indiana, Illinois and two in Florida, Mascharello said. The Warsaw store will be managed by Mercury Pappes.

"We're a small, family-owned business, started by Mark Schoops, in Munster," Art said. "We're reasonably priced, with all menu items sold a la carte."

The 7-ounce handmade burgers sell for under $3, he added.

"Warsaw is a real nice town, and we're very happy to be here," Mascharello said. "We're very excited about being part of the community."

Classic car buffs will find more than just culinary satisfaction at Schoops, Art added. He plans on frequently hosting classic car drive-ins throughout the summer.
