Schools Must Make Up Days Missed In Storm

Posted

Students may be thrilled at all the school cancellations now but, come June, they may not be quite so happy.

State law requires all missed days to be made up, said Dr. Lee Harman, superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools.

Most area schools have canceled classes all week, but the problem, Harman said, is "it's only January."

So far, most school corporation officials have met to decide what days will be used for makeup dates, but all stressed that the schedule is tentative because no one knows how severe the weather will be the rest of the winter.

Schedule changes by school corporation are:

Warsaw

Two snow days are built into Warsaw's schedule, and four days so far have been missed. Harman said Presidents' Day, Feb. 15, which was originally scheduled as a holiday, will be a makeup day, and the rest of the makeup days will be added on to the end of the year.

Warsaw's first semester was originally scheduled to end Jan. 15, and teacher records day, when students were off school, was originally Jan. 18.

As of today, Harman said, the end of the semester will be moved to Jan. 21, with teacher records day Jan. 22, when students will be off school.

Wawasee

Three days are built into Wawasee's schedule for emergency cancellations. Makeup days so far will be Jan. 11, which was originally scheduled to be a teacher day with students off school; Presidents' Day, Feb. 15; and May 28, also scheduled to be a teacher day. Two more days, June 1 and 2, will be added to the end of the year. Any additional snow days will be added in June.

Wawasee's first semester, which was scheduled to end today, will now end Jan. 15. The school year, which should have ended May 27, will now extend into June.

Tippecanoe Valley

Three emergency days were added into Tippecanoe Valley's schedule, and makeup days are now set for Jan. 18, previously a teacher work day; Feb. 15, Presidents' Day, previously a holiday; and June 4.

The end of the first semester was scheduled for Jan. 15, and officials did not know this morning whether the semester end will be pushed back.

Whitko

Only one emergency day is built into Whitko's school calendar, with make up on Presidents' Day. However, administration officials said no definite decisions have yet been made on making up the snow days already missed.
