School Delays Adoption Of Portfolio Program

Posted

Adoption of a state-suggested program was delayed by the Warsaw School Board Monday for further study.

Adoption of a portfolio program, which previously was required by the Indiana Department of Education, was changed to a voluntary program by the state in July. School board members, believing the program will create more work for teachers and less time to teach, asked for more information on the program before making a decision on adoption.

The school board also reviewed internal board policies and a policy dealing with school inventories as required by the State Board of Accounts.

Rande Thorpe, WCS business manager, told the board the school system already performs its own inventories and will continue to do so.

Thorpe also told the board his office recently received notification from the state auditor's office that the state did not appropriate enough money to compensate for the 1996 cut in excise taxes. Entities that receive proceeds from the excise tax will need to find additional funding, usually through property taxes.

However, Thorpe said, there is still time for the state legislature to appropriate funds to make up the difference. Even if the state does not, he said, "it's not going to have a great effect in Warsaw."
