Tuesday's flooding caused many local schools to dismiss early or have morning delays, and bus drivers to redirect their routes this week.
Warsaw Community School Corp. had a two-hour early dismissal Tuesday and a two- hour delay Wednesday morning to allow bus drivers and students to navigate and see roads safely, according to Kay Kelly, administrative assistant to the superintendent.Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. also dismissed students Tuesday two hours early and had a two-hour morning delay Wednesday.
"Getting our bus drivers and students around on the road safely was a concern, and we had a morning delay Wednesday because we wanted to ensure the drivers had light to see the roads," said Brett Boggs, Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. assistant superintendent.
Boggs said bus drivers contacted parents for homes that were not able to be reached as a result of flood conditions. He said additional miles were added to some routes to get to bus pick-up sites safely.
Steve Clason, Whitko superintendent, said the school had a two-hour morning delay Wednesday, but did not have an early dismissal this week.
"We re-routed buses this week to assure a safe way for students to get home," Clason said.
There were six families in the corporation who had flooding, and they notified bus drivers to drop the students off at relatives' homes who received less flooding.
Ted Chittum, Triton School Corp. superintendent, said the corporation cancelled its evening activities Tuesday and had a two-hour morning school delay Wednesday.
Chittum said some roads in the district remained closed today and roadblocks have been set up.
He said parents have been good about bringing the children up to the buses so bus drivers can avoid flood conditions.
Manchester School Corp. had a 1:30 p.m. early dismissal Tuesday and a two-hour morning delay Wednesday.
Wawasee School Corp. had an early dismissal Tuesday.
High school and middle school bus routes were diverted from CR 1000E between King Arthur Trail and CR 1100N, Ind. 13 at South Shores Golf Course and CR 200W between CR 1250N and CR 1350N, according to Bob Lahrman, coordinator of support services for Wawasee.
