School Board Names McGuire As New WCS Superintendent

Dr. David B. McGuire was approved Monday by the school board as the new superintendent for Warsaw Community Schools.

He has been acting superintendent since Dr. Lee Harman tendered his resignation June 17, and McGuire's recommendation to the position was announced Monday by school board president Craig Allebach.

"He brings a wide variety of experience to the job - he has taught or worked with students at all age levels," Allebach said.

"He's a home-grown boy, he knows the staff, he knows the strengths and weaknesses of the system. This is critical as we try to increase the achievements of the students."

McGuire, 55, said after the meeting that he doesn't anticipate making major changes in the administration of the school corporation.

He does, however, see the biggest issue the school corporation faces as the "challenge of literacy," which he hopes to remedy by reaching students at a younger age and by more one-on-one programs, such as Reading Recovery.

He is a Warsaw native and received his bachelor's degree from Manchester College, his master's degree from Saint Francis College in Fort Wayne and his doctorate from Ball State University. He has taught in Wabash, Wawasee and Warsaw schools, was principal of Lakeview Middle School for three years and has been assistant superintendent since 2001.

He and his wife, Jane, have two children, who are both graduates of Indiana University.

McGuire, whose position as superintendent was effective immediately, said he is very excited about his new job.

Even so, he said, he still misses being in the classroom.

"One of the ways I get my energy back," he said, "is to go visit a classroom or just be in a school."

McGuire's promotion leaves the position of assistant superintendent open. Applications will be taken for that job until July 31.
