A 76-year-old Warsaw woman nearly was the victim of a scam last week.
According to the Warsaw Police Department, the woman called to report the incident Tuesday.
The woman told police she received a call at her home from a man who said he was from the corporate office of National City Bank. She said he sounded like a professional white man in his 30s.
The call, said the woman who has a National City Bank account, sounded legitimate because the man had her account number. She did not suspect anything until the man asked for her checking account routing number, saying he needed it to verify her account.
When the woman refused to give the man her routing number, he told her that her account would be closed immediately and she should throw her checks away.
After the call, the woman called the local National City Bank office and talked with an official who told her the bank would never call and ask for the routing number for a checking account.
He told her the call was a scam.
