Students in Construction Systems and Manufacturing Systems classes Thursday at Warsaw Area Career Center got an introduction to sawing wood for the use of cabinetry, flooring and other purposes.
Gary Green (L), purveyor of fine hardwood and softwood lumber, Syracuse, had his portable, 32-horse diesel engine band saw at the WACC to show classes how a log is sawed into boards.
He told students Indiana is in a hardwood region, and the state is blessed with resources. The value of wood is determined by its grade, which is determined by lack of defects or knots.
The first log he sawed for students was an 11-foot hickory, provided by retired teacher Jim LeMasters. Green spoke to three classes Thursday.
