Samuel Kris Hitt, 58, of Winona Lake, passed away at 4:27 p.m. July 10, 2011, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born June 10, 1953, in Orange County, Calif., to Sharon Parks Hitt.

He lived in California until 1994 before moving to Lisbon, Ohio, where he lived for 11 years. He then moved to Winona Lake, where he has lived for the last five years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1972-76, serving as a aircraft ordinance tech. He was involved in operations in Cambodia and Vietnam. He received an associate’s degree in computer technology from Washington Community State College. He worked for various ski resorts in Colorado. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Salem, Ohio, and enjoyed fishing, camping, the outdoors, mountains and the ocean.

Surviving are his companion, Marta McDade, Winona Lake; a daughter, Felicia Hitt, Elk City, Okla.; three stepchildren, Grace and Jean McDade, both of Winona Lake, and Jeffrey Hamman Jr., Warsaw; a granddaughter, Evely Veloz, Elk City; a step-granddaughter, Lacey McDade, Winona Lake; a special aunt, Delores Bates, Salem, Ohio; and four sisters: Karen Hitt, California; Debbie Burkholder, Wisconsin; Shelley English, California; and Lisa, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents; two grandchildren, William and Shalicia Veloz; and a brother, Bobby Hitt.

No services or calling are planned.

McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
