Salvation Army Food Pantry In Need Of Donations

Posted

Capt. Joel Dalberg said the Salvation Army cupboard is bare, or nearly bare.

He doesn't consider a few cans of sweet potatoes a full food pantry.

"We're filling an average of 116 grocery orders each month," Dalberg said. "We're out. Empty."

For most of the year community donations have kept the larders full. The South Bend Food Bank has been directing commodities to the South since Hurricane Katrina a year ago.

Food bank deliveries are being made to Warsaw again, but high demand has led to bare shelves.

"People pick up groceries once a month and only for two months in a row," Dalberg said. "No one is abusing the system. The demand is so high. We've seen a huge increase in the number of people who ask for help."

Because the Salvation Army and Combined Community Services exchange information there is little overlap in services.

The Salvation Army helps with rental payments and CCS helps with utility payments. Both organizations have food available.
