Salons Sponsor 'Cut For Cancer'

Cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy must deal with hair loss.

To help themselves continue to look and feel good during chemotherapy, they turn to local hair salons and styling studios.

Waunita Young, proprietor of Think Young Styling Studio, has noticed the increasing number of cancer patients in Kosciusko County. In an effort to raise money to directly help cancer patients, Think Young and seven other salons and studios are sponsoring a "Cut For Cancer" day.

On July 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., stylists from the eight studios will cut hair at Think Young for a minimal donation of at least $10. There will be 20 chairs outside, weather permitting, where 28 stylists from D.C. Haircrafters, Benz Salon & Spa, Making Waves Styling Salon, Design One, Today's Headlines, New Attitude, Country Cuts and Think Young will volunteer their time to cut hair to benefit the "Founders Fund for Cancer Care" under the auspices of Kosciusko 21st Century Foundation Inc.

"(Cancer's) been a growing situation and we've seen the great effects of helping people deal with this," said Young.

To increase the funds raised for cancer, Nelson Golden Glo chicken will also be sold. It is hoped that 900 tickets for the chicken will be sold before the actual event takes place.

Young said the project's goals is to raise a minimum of $3,000. But they're not just counting on chicken and haircuts.

Businesses and industries are also invited to make donations of $250 to $300 for the local fight against cancer. They would like the final total to reach $10,000.

Cow Country 102.7 will be present as will Dr. Neil Van Ness. Van Ness will answer questions about cancer.

"He will give his time up for this. That's very special," said Young.

Information also will be on hand about preventing hair loss when dealing with chemotherapy and treatment for skin and nails. The "Just Peachey" cookbook will also be on hand for purchase for $15. Money earned through the sell of the books will benefit cancer research at Indiana University, Young said.

"We really implore the community to make it a success that day. We hope it's the busiest place in Warsaw that day," Young said.

Teena Young said, "We're giving all we've got. We just ask the community to give it all they've got."

A large awning is being sought for the benefit in case of extreme heat or rain.

Think Young is at 2626 E. Jefferson St., Warsaw. Advance tickets for the chicken can be bought by calling 269-4957. Businesses wanting to donate money also can call the same number.
