One year ago state sales tax was increased to 7 percent. The tradeoff was that citizens would have the chance to approve constitutional property tax caps. It was also implied that the General Assembly would act favorably upon this a second time.
There is no valid reason for the House not to act on this during the current session. Waiting one year to do so is nothing more than a fruitless tactic of "out of sight, out of mind." Acting on this now will assure people of their forthcoming opportunity in 2010 to act upon this matter and allow them to become more informed about the issue in the meantime.
If the Legislature fails to fulfill their part in this, it will be a breach of trust that the people extended to them. Contact Pat Bauer, Speaker of the House, and Bill Crawford, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and let them know that you expect the process to move forward.
To further make the point, plan to attend the Rally by the Hoosier Property Tax Reform Alliance (www.hoosierpropertytaxreform.com) on Tuesday, March 10, at 11:30 a.m. at the State House.
