Flashes of light and loud booms from fireworks are entertaining for all ages, but the best Fourth of July celebration is a safe one.
As the holiday approaches, there are many common-sense rules that will help keep families safe as they celebrate Independence Day.
Here are some tips to keep in mind while you celebrate:
n Never let children handle, play with or light any fireworks.
n Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
n Always buy fireworks from a reliable, licensed dealer.
n Keep a bucket of water, fire extinguisher and/or a hose handy to douse any sparks. Dunk all fireworks in a bucket of water after use and let them sit in the water for a while. The same goes for sparklers.
n Use fireworks in an open area and keep those watching the display a safe distance from the lighting area.
n Only light fireworks on flat surfaces to prevent them from falling over.
n Safety glasses should be worn by people setting off the fireworks or those who are close to the lighting site.
n Do not alter fireworks or try to make your own fireworks.
n Only light fireworks one device at a time.
n Never try to re-light or fix "dud" fireworks.
n Be cautious when lighting fireworks during windy conditions. Be sure to light the devices with the wind blowing away from those watching.
n Do not smoke when handling fireworks.
n Don't aim, point or throw fireworks at people or animals.
