Fifth- and sixth-grade students at Sacred Heart School competed in the annual Scripps Howard Spelling Bee. After the third round, three students, Teresa Verteramo, Leanna Chan, and Matthew Grothouse, were left standing. By the eighth round, Chan and Grothouse were in a 'spell-down.' Grothouse became the Sacred Heart champion in the 12th round by spelling 'proceed' correctly. Grothouse then moved on to the county bee.
