S. Lake May Use County Zoning

SILVER LAKE -ÊKosciusko County Area Plan Commission ordinances could be in effect soon in Silver Lake.

The Silver Lake Town Council said Tuesday it is considering giving property planning and zoning controls to the county.

"We're not qualified in that stuff," councilwoman Brenda Wadkins said.

"The rules we have are just not cutting it," she said.

Few residents attended yesterday's hearing to voice their opinions to council members.

The plan commission coordinates development throughout the county. Their ordinances aim to promote organized property growth, Kosciusko County Area Plan Director Dan Richard said.

"It'd make good sense to have organization," said Dave Baxter, a resident in Silver Lake's recently annexed lake area. He had concerns about lakefront property guidelines.

A woman was against the move. She warned the council members to "read the fine print" before making a final decision.

"You will do what they tell you," said Harriette Zimmer, Silver Lake, rapping her fingernails on the tabletop.

Richard suggested the council hold another public hearing before the change.

In the early 1980s, the town left the county plan commission for reasons of control.
