S. Lake Hires Officer

SILVER LAKE - Residents can rest easy knowing there's a police officer in town again.

Craig Hollopeter of Warsaw was hired during a special meeting of the Silver Lake Town Council Wednesday to fill the available marshal job. He begins on May 12.

Hollopeter replaces Travis Marsh, who resigned in March to take a job with the Syracuse Police Department. The town was without a police officer for nearly six months prior to Marsh after the termination of longtime marshal Max Weller in January 1996.

A former Indiana State Police trooper, Hollopeter, 37, has already completed training requirements for the job. He will, however, attend a 40-hour refresher course later this month.

Hollopeter's contract calls for a one-year probationary term, during which he will not be required to move to Silver Lake. He lives south of Warsaw with his wife and eight children. If his contract is extended after the probation period, Hollopeter will need to move to town or within a 15-mile radius.

Until that time, Hollopeter will not be allowed to drive the police car for transportation to and from his residence.

After he was sworn in by clerk-treasurer Fern Strong, Hollopeter was given the keys to his new office and the squad car so he will have a chance to inspect the equipment available to him. He will continue his self-employment as well as working the marshal job.
