S. Lake Gets Sewer Grant

Posted

SILVER LAKE - A six-year wait for grant funds is nearing an end at Silver Lake.

The Silver Lake Town Council announced Tuesday that the $545,000 awarded in 1990 through the Build Indiana Fund will be issued after paperwork is completed. The process is under way.

The grant money was to be used to help fund the sewer system expansion in town. Since the money was never received, the town ended up bonding $1,120,000 instead of $655,000. After the funds are received, the town will conduct a public hearing to amend the sewer rate ordinance; the rates will likely be lowered.

In other business, the council passed an ordinance amending another ordinance. The new rule states that no more than one house, trailer or mobile home may be placed per lot in town. A lot is defined as property 132 feet by 66 feet.

Any existing lot less than that size on which there is already a house, trailer or mobile home will be permitted to remain. Replacement structures on those smaller lots will be allowed only if the 5-foot setback requirements are met on all property lines.

Lots less than 132-by-66 without existing housing cannot have a structure placed on them without prior approval from the council.

The council also:

• Approved two building permits: one for Kenneth Fritchman to construct a garage and one for Lloyd Whitaker to add a deck to his residence.

• Passed a resolution cutting the 1996 budget by $26,000.

• Discussed a water rate increase; no action was taken.

• Set trick-or-treat hours for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in the town hall.
