SILVER LAKE - State Rep. Bill Ruppel (R-North Manchester) presented a check for $70,000 to the town of Silver Lake Tuesday night.
The funding will assist with the town's municipal water project. The money comes from Build Indiana funds.
After the presentation, the town council approved an ordinance establishing purchasing rules for every expenditure of public funds by a governmental body.
Ordinance No. 98-09-02 states that supplies manufactured in the United States must be specified for all town purchases and will be purchased unless the town determines otherwise.
The town may not purchase U.S. manufactured goods if:
There are not reasonably available quantities;
If the price of the goods exceeds by an unreasonable amount the price of available and comparable supplies manufactured elsewhere;
The quality of supplies manufactured in the United States is substantially less than the quality of comparably priced available supplies manufactured elsewhere;
Or the purchase of supplies manufactured in the United States is not in the public interest.
The council also resolved to pay a portion of Bunker Uniform for the Silver Lake volunteer firemen. The total the council will pay is $2,500.
Ordinance 98-09-01 was then approved by the council. The ordinance states that no employee of the town of Silver Lake, Silver Lake Municipal Waterworks or Silver Lake Municipal Sewage, if they are a volunteer firefighter, shall be paid more than 20 hours paid leave in any calendar year for fighting fires.
The volunteer firefighters will be paid their hourly wages when called out to a fire during their regular work period. If they have to return to their regular jobs for anything that needs to be completed, after normal stopping time, they will need to find a safe stopping point and not unnecessarily work overtime.
The meeting concluded with the approval and signing of the claim docket.
