Russell H. Long, 86, of 944 Jones Road, Gas City, died at 10:18 a.m. Oct. 18, 2009, in his residence.

He was born May 1, 1923, in Marshall County, to Frederick and Fern Pomeroy Long. On April 20, 1946, in Warsaw, he married Ester Shand, who survives.

He moved to Gas City from Warsaw nine years ago. He was a self-employed owner of Long's Custom Digging, Warsaw. He attended First United Methodist Church and Walnut Creek United Methodist Church, both in Warsaw. He was a member of the Winona Lake Lions Club; American Legion Post 10, Marion; Warsaw Square Dancing Club; East Central Indiana Carvers Club; and Fishermans National Hall of Fame, holding Indiana's record for landing the largest carp from Pike Lake, Warsaw. He was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corp, serving in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater from 1942-46.

Also surviving are two daughters, Linda (and spouse Dennis) Johnson, Gas City, and Pat (and spouse Bob) Craig, Warsaw; a son, Larry (and spouse Diana) Long, Warsaw; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Doug Davies officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military honors by members of American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
