Connie Rufenbarger graduated in 1969 from Ball State University with degrees in English and psychology, but she’s made more significant strides than most doctors in the fight against breast cancer.

The May 2012 Ball State Alumnus features Rufenbarger and her work to battle the disease.

Rufenbarger is one of the original founders of the only biorepository of normal breast tissue in the world, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank and Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.

As a two-time breast cancer survivor herself, the fight for Rufenbarger began when she was diagnosed at 34 years old.

Collecting tissue samples from women who are cancer free gives researchers around the world the opportunity to identify and understand the disease by comparing healthy tissue with diseased tissue.
