NAPPANEE - Ruby Alice Whelan, 87, of 406 Heritage Lane, Nappanee, died at 2:23 a.m. June 20, 2010, in her residence, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Warsaw, to Marion and Emmy McCandlish Reiff. On Feb. 1, 1941, she married Henry J. "Hank" Whelan, who survives.

Moving to Nappanee from North Webster in 1963, she graduated from North Webster High School. She retired from Pacific Molasses Co. after 10 years as secretary. She volunteered for many years with her husband at Nappanee Open Door. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Bremen.

Also surviving are a son, Larry (and spouse Helen) Whelan, Nappanee; two daughters, Judy (and spouse Melvin) Myers, Nappanee, and Mary Ann (and spouse Dennis) Taylor, Wakarusa; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Bremen, with Father Ferdinand Polycarp officiating, assisted by Father Terry Fisher. Prayers and eulogy will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, by the Rev. Janet McFall-Brown. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a rosary service at 8 p.m.
