Congratulations to Sheriff Goshert on his selection at the recent caucus. His acknowledgement of the training and guidance he had received from the Rovenstines was very classy. All of the candidates were well-qualified and will have plenty of time to make their case to the public prior to the next election.
Several candidates made reference to the discord between the sheriff's department and the Warsaw Police Department and that new leadership was needed. Having observed and listened to the discussion for many years, I'm of the opinion that the problem is not in the sheriff's department.
It was thoroughly disgusting to see some of the WPD members "high fiving" it at the hearing when Sheriff Rovenstine entered his guilty plea. It just reinforced the belief that this was all just part of the internal rivalry between the departments and that WPD is now one up. The call for healing from the WPD rings a little hollow if it is done just after such a great victory for your department.
Another disgusting event was the "victory lap" press conference by Prosecutor Chipman where he trashed the 37-year legacy of the Rovenstines’ service to this county. Both Aaron’s and Al's service to this community has been fantastic and I will always be grateful for it. The timing of the indictment, four days before the cutoff date for the selection of the finalists for the Indiana State Supreme Court, may have just been a coincidence, but it does raise questions. Gov. Holcomb made a good choice in selecting the Wabash judge to fill that position.
Finally, thank you, Gary Gerard, for the excellent News Views editorial June 10. It was right on the money.
