Roundabout Tips

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
I am a resident of the west side of Warsaw that has the pleasure of using our new roundabout on a daily basis. Through my experience thus far, the roundabout is a great addition to the Lake Street/Fox Farm Road intersection, though I believe that much of the general public doesn’t understand how to properly use it.

Every day I follow and witness people being confused in many different ways on the proper use of the roundabout. Therefore, I would like to help those drivers understand the intersection to better enhance their comfort and safety when using the devise. I don’t feel a complete list of rules need to be printed though I would like to share a few very important ones.

1. When approaching a roundabout, slow down. In the multi-lane portion of the roundabout, look for roadside signs and pavement markings to guide you into the appropriate lane. It is important that you be in the correct lane prior to entering the roundabout. Westbound Lake Street turning north onto Fox Farm Road has its own designated lane, though those using it should still yield to roundabout traffic.

2. As you approach the yield line (not stop line), look to your left before entering the roundabout. Vehicles within the roundabout have the right of way. Enter the roundabout and merge into the traffic flow once an adequate gap is available. You will not need to use your signal to enter the roundabout. Everyone knows you will be rounding counterclockwise (left) just as they are. Please be aware and do not stop unless necessary.

3. All movement within the roundabout circulates counterclockwise. Never turn left into the roundabout from the yield line.

4. When traveling within the roundabout, only stop to avoid a collision. You have the right of way over entering traffic.

5. When approaching the roundabout, avoid traveling at a speed greater than the posted advisory speed.

6. Continue through the roundabout until you reach your exit. Use your turn signal when exiting. This will notify anyone entering the roundabout at your exit point that they may proceed to enter.

7. If an emergency vehicle approaches the roundabout ...

Directly behind you just prior to you entering the roundabout (single lane approach): Enter the roundabout and travel to your exit. After exiting the roundabout, immediately maneuver your vehicle to the right side of the road to allow the emergency vehicle to pass you. Do not stop in the roundabout.

I hope this will help those that have been misinformed or confused. If you would like to find more information on the navigation of a roundabout, there are many web sites available by searching the subject.
