Roundabout

Editor, Times-Union:

Did someone say planning lately in regard to transportation problems? I don't think they do enough of that here. For example, there is a big mess in front of Menards that could be ameliorated with a roundabout.

The traffic trying to come up the hill to Menards from U.S. 30 is often backed up the entire length of the street from U.S. 30 up to the stop sign. Try to get out of Culver's. A median forces cars to go up the hill when exiting Culver's, but the left lane north bound is bumper to bumper so forget it if you want to go up the hill and make a U turn to go back down to U.S. 30. We found Culver's side exit, we are glad to say.

Who planned Culver's on such a small lot? Where Culver's employees will park, when someone buys the dirt lot across from Culver's, is anybody's guess. We see Culver's people trying to get across the busy street to work on foot from a dirt lot across the street, at the hazard of their lives.

I must congratulate the city of Warsaw on the new Parker Street improvements though. It is very nice looking, and sidewalks for pedestrians on both sides of the street too! Sidewalks build strong neighborhoods, and are badly needed in many parts of Warsaw. Building codes elsewhere have mandated sidewalks on both sides of the street for ages.

But take a drive through the northern suburbs of Indy and you will see roundabouts galore, which move traffic through intersections so well no matter which way you are going, and reduce accidents.
