Former South Whitley Elementary Principal George Roth said it was time to try something new.
Roth told staff he would be resigning his job June 1.
"I've got numerous things I'm looking at," said Roth. "I'm old enough to retire if I want. There are some education jobs as well as some non-education jobs."
Roth said if he retires it would give him more time with his two sons and five grandchildren.
A native of Madison, Wis., Roth said the move wasn't prompted by anything other than wanting a change.
Roth came to South Whitley Elementary in 2007 after stints in the Manchester, Butler and Coesse school systems.
Roth began his teaching career in South Whitley in 1980.
With his wife Gail's family living in Whitley County, Roth said they were going to stay in the area.
While his time at South Whitley may be over, Roth said he enjoyed working with the children and parents there.
"We've got great kids," said Roth. "They are eager, good learners. And we have a community that really appreciates South Whitley Elementary."
