If at first you can't get a record contract - try, try again.
Then, if that fails, record your own music.
That's the approach local rock band Soul Fyre is taking. They want to make their own music so much they're recording their own original music in lead vocalist and keyboardist Steve Miller's home. They've got the equipment, the software and the computer. Now, it's just a matter of laying down the tracks before releasing the CD in the fall.
Joining Miller in the attempt to jump-start their music careers are band members Greg Prater, lead rhythm guitars, vocals; Jeff Frazier, guitar; Todd Baker, drums; and Dan Damron, bass and vocals.
Damron said the band's had the home studio up and running for eight months now. All the members collaborate on the song-writing.
"(It's) hard rock to mainstream," said Baker.
"What we've definitely all agreed upon is we're making marketable music," said Damron. Each member of the band has played music for many years, he said, and they want to slowly wean their fans off the cover songs the band does and play their original music.
Miller said they've "got something to work with. Right now, we're just trying to get the world's attention."
"For me," said Baker, "first and foremost, it's all about the music."
The band has six songs, about four of them already recorded. When the CD comes out later this year, Damron said, they plan to have about 12 original songs on the CD.
"No drugs, no alcohol," said Miller. "Our fix is our music."
Damron said to get that fix, they're not going to sit back and wait for someone to come to them to put out their music. They're going to put out their music themselves.
"We are all working stiffs," said Miller. "We believe in our music and we're trying every avenue to make it work."
"We could never be content if we didn't try," said Damron.
He said he's been in a lot of bands and Soul Fyre is the closest to perfect he can ever imagine.
"Personally," said Baker, "we're going to take it to the limit."
"We've done way too much to give up now," said Miller.
Soul Fyre plays at venues in Warsaw, Angola and Fort Wayne, and they hope to be playing out in Chicago soon. "Pretty much all over northern Indiana from the west side to the east," said Baker.
