PIERCETON - Robert J. "Bob" English, 94, of 205 W. Wayne St., Pierceton, died at 1:55 p.m. Jan. 19, 2008, in his residence.

He was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Columbia City, to Philemon Allen and Lydia Haas English. He married Dora Grace Fluke, who preceded him in death along with their infant son, Michael. On Oct. 6, 1940, in Huntington, he married Esther Davis, who died in 2005. They were married for 65 years, raising five children.

He was a 1932 Pierceton High School graduate. A lifetime Pierceton resident, he lived in the same residence for 68 years. Before and after serving in World War II, he worked as a field supervisor at Reid Murdock, Pierceton. In the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was attached to the 414th Night Fighter Squadron in the European Theater, serving as an aircraft electrician with a rank of staff sergeant. Serving the Pierceton community in many ways, he was an active member of Pierceton Lions for 56 years, and a member of American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Pierceton School Board and Pierceton United Methodist Church Board, where he served as Sunday school superintendent. He was honored as Pierceton Citizen of the Year in 1983, and as Lion of the Year in 1996-67. He was one of the few men honored for his participation as a Boy Scout in the charting of the Lincoln Highway. With all that he did to serve the church, school and community, he also enjoyed his family, sailing and the cottage that he built at Riding Lake in 1952.

Surviving are his children: Anita (and spouse Jeff) Land, Indianapolis; Janet (and spouse Carl) English-Young, Corvallis, Ore.; David (and spouse Chris) English, Bremen; Barbara (and spouse Jeff) Hamman, Leesburg; and Carol (and spouse Gary) Robbins, Pierceton; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Albert, Carl and Glen.

His family appreciates the wonderful care and support of his caregivers and extended family.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Pierceton, with Pastors Duane Kline and Don Poyser officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, with a military service by members of Pierceton American Legion.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Pierceton, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
